Like Patricija, I wonder whether men are more likely to commit homicide, or whether they are more likely to be charged with homicide.

I found this fact about infanticide particularly interesting: “mothers who kill their children are likely to be placed in a mental institution or on parole, whereas fathers who commit the same crime are overwhelmingly convicted of homicide and sentenced to prison.” I wonder if this is the case because as a society, we think that a woman who kills her own infant has to mentally impaired- otherwise, how could she do it? However, the earlier statistics of who "commits murder" fails to take this into account. It makes me wonder, if men really are 10 times more likely to commit homicide or are they simply 10 times more likely to be CHARGED with homicide.

Secondly, I really want to know what drives these trends. In particular, what societal gender pressures and stereotypes are driving these tendencies for the different kinds of murders. This made me think of the 'heat of passion defense' which is likewise based on this premise. This defense is almost exclusively applied to benefit men. This defense is wholly gendered, and rooted in the most base assumptions about a man's character, and our long history of honor killings.Sarahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08328788742723908281noreply@blogger.com
