Distorting the women's rights movement

http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2010-11-26/sarah-palins-america-by-heart-distorts-feminist-history/full/

This article is extremely disheartening because it represents the ease with which people can co-opt the women's rights movement and distort everything it stands for with just a little revisionist history.

The article on Palin's book and her supposed feminism is, indeed, very disheartening, but not surprising at all.  As I pointed out in my earlier blog, the skill of a politician in framing the debate often degrades into deceit.

Palin's new book is another attempt at neo-con revisionist history. What is suprising about this book is the lack of research and rigor that went into it.

Palin parades herself around the country as the model of a good feminist while exhibiting a significant lack of understanding of what feminists have been fighting for all these decades.

She not only distorts the women's rights movement, she is the new cheerleader to roll back hard won rights.

She is laughing all the way to the bank.

"In some ways, it’s a good thing that Sarah Palin calls herself a feminist. It means that, even among conservatives, women’s equality has become a normative position, the starting point for debate. It means that feminism has gone from something that the right wants to destroy to something it wants to appropriate. That’s progress, of a sort."

I think that's a fair quote and something to be happy about. Suddenly the title of "feminist" is a good thing, a label that even Palin wants. There is a silver lining to this disgrace of a book.
